Marbled Paper

A speciality hand decoration

Here is a very brief outline of marbled paper ~ brief because I know little more about it other than it has a remarkable ~ unique ~ beauty that indicates artistic craftsmanship at its best.

Marbled papers are very suitable for several aspects of bookcraft ~ end papers and covering spring to mind. I am unsure as to how the inks will withstand wear for covering books, but covering boxes would be suitable. Most marbled papers use a good quality ~ fairly thick ~ paper

Making marbled paper

A sheet of paper is floated onto a chemical bath which has a range of coloured oil paints floating on the top. Some of the oily paint sticks to the paper. The paper is then carefully removed ~ rinsed ~ left to dry ~ and kept ready for use or sale. Several more sheets can be made in similar fashion before the paint runs out and the pattern is disturbed too much.

It is the pattern that requires skill ~ technique ~ and artistry. Firstly a suitable selection of colours is chosen. That requires sheer artistic talent. The way the colours are floated onto the surface ~ and then distributed into patterns ~ requires experience along with all the other skills. There is a wide selection of tools available ~ ranging from a single pointed stick to a comb with a hundred sharp nails sticking out of it. These are gently swirled around ~ flicked ~ twisted ~ brushed how else to describe the patterns? I believe they do have names ~ Turkish ~ Peacock ~ French Swirl ~ Nonpareil ~ Moiré ~ Marble ~~~. I must refer readers to expertise elsewhere if they wish to know more. There is plenty of information on the Web.

Availability

Several professional marblers have their own websites. Expect to pay in excess of £10 per sheet for good paper ~ the size varies. Several designers have some of their work re-printed by offset litho ~ a good economy measure ~ but lacking the stunningly sharp crispness of the original. Such sheets are available from bookbinders' suppliers ~ and other outlets.
