Writing simple numerical sentences

Open-ended maths tasks

This task is about using a selection of digits and mathematical signs to write short ~ correct ~ sentences. There are numerous opportunities for making the task more difficult. Typically these would involve using a restricted number of digits or signs. There are several long-established tasksfor which these difficulties are iposed. Here I am encouraging some easy free tasks. Once you have done one or two of my suggestions try inventing your own rules ~ you might even set something that is not possible!

You will either have to self-check that your sentences are correct ~ or get someone else to exercise their brains for you. It helps to make a set of digit-cards and symbol cards.

Ten single digits and many + and - signs available

Two sentences a+b=c and d+e=f where any six different digits may be used. For example ~ 1+2=3 and 4+5=9

One long sentence a^b^c^d = f where the spaces between the digits ~ denoted here by ^ ~ are filled with + or - signs. Such as ~ 2+3+4-1=8

One long sentence a^b^c^d = fg where the spaces between the digits ~ denoted here by ^ ~ are filled with + or - signs. Example ~ 2+3+4+6=15

It is easy to write a sentence of the form a^b^c=d^e where ^ can be 'no gap' or 'any symbol you wish' such as 12x7=84.

Now try something like a b c d e f g h = j k

Twenty single digits and many plus or minus signs
