Thinking about shapes

A discovery project

You will need to be able to imagine what shapes look like. That is not easy. I will help by providing some pictures.

Many years ago someone had a hunch. He thought about it and applied his ideas to several shapes and models and slowly ~ or maybe it was quickly (I do not know enough about that!) ~ he really felt his hunch was right most of the time. Eventually he was able to describe his hunch in words and symbols in such a way that other people could use it and confirm whether it was always true ~ or not. I invite you to do some thinking and ~ maybe ~ you will be able to become as wise as he was. Maybe you will become as famous also ~ but you will have to find something else that is clever, since he was the first to write all about this particular project.

Find a simple ~ normal ~ everyday ~ cardboard box or tin. To write thatmore accurately I should have put 'a box with every edge to be a rectangle.

Next ~ count up the number of edges. Count the number of vertices. Count the number of faces. Remember these numbers.

I am going to ask you to repeat this exercise with some other shapes. Since you will be doing a fair bit of counting it will help to write down your findings instead of remembering them all. I suggest you make a table that will look something like this ...

Now put down your results for the cardboard box.
