Counting tomatoes

It can be done quite quickly if you invent a shortcut

Try to answer the question without pointing at the tomatoes one-by-one.

Counting tomatoes
How many tomatoes are in this picture?

If you find that you counted them by going one~two~three~four~... then that's fine. You will not need me to tell you the answer.

That's it ~ end of story ~ you have counted them successfully.

This page is intended for discussion with someone who is your currently guide to living ~ in other words a teacher of somesort ~ someone you can interact with, and discuss. I cannot do that from a distance, nor even train you in my way of thinking ~ which might not be a good idea.

The shortcut I mentioned is not necessarily obvious to anyone else but me, and maybe some others who just happen to have thought along the same lines. You may have found an even better shortcut. In case you do not know what I am talking about ~ spotting patterns ~ I noticed that there is a row of four tomatoes at the bottom ~ then another just above it ~ and there are five such rows. Luckily I also spotted tha the row underneath the top row has got five in it. I think that seeing the pattern helped me to make a short cut. Maths is all about spotting patterns to enable short cuts. Why not start with tomatoes?
