Notes on Dresden

Capital City of the German State of Saxony

Dresden is one of the largest cities in Germany, and is situated in the far east of the country. The river Elbe flows from the east to west, and Dresden is built on both banks of the river ~ which has severely flooded several times in recent years. The Elbe Valley in that region has been made a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

There are numerous sites in the city which have all been exquisitely restored in the original Baroque Style since their complete destruction in 1945. This is a considerable attraction for the tourist trade. The city hosts the State Parliament and the other various Saxon offices, and there are several establishments of university status and research institutes.

I suspect that there was a toll for crossing the bridge ~ the Augustusbrücke ~ and that the busy ferry was cheaper. The sailing vessels and the steamer were ~ presumably ~ restricted to the stretch of river above the bridge.

There are numerous pictures of Dresden, and the surroundings, on the WWW. I have chosen some antique views since they still apply ~ are full of interest ~ are out of copyright ~ and in my possession.
