Sir Richard Arkwright was an inventive entrepreneur and successful businessman ~ specializing in the textile manufacturing trade. His notable achievements were a carding machine and a spinning frame ~ both processes were previously very labour intensive. At first these machines were driven by horsepower ~ later by water ~ and finally by steam engine and (much later) by electricity. All this forming a major part of the Industrial Revolution of that era.
He is particularly associated with Cromford ~ where a commemorative celebration was held in 1971 ~ 200 years after he built a water-powered mill there. His mill has been preserved as a free-to-enter UNESCO World Heritage Site ~ and from the WWW description it would be well worth a visit for the museum and occasional Artisan Markets [Cromford Mills].
