Backing a book is the process of rounding the spine ~ one part of the Forwarding []. Backing requires the book to be held exceptionally tightly in a finishing press. The pressure over the spine is increased by a taper on the boards. Backing Boards ~ unlike Pressing Boards ~ are invariably made of wood ~ frequently kiln-dried beechwood.
