Making Simple Covers

Paqper and card crafts often require coverings. Here I describe simple covers ~ those which do not involve going round corners ~ or coping with notches ~ or rounded corners.

The idea is simple ~ a piece of rough board is covered with something more suitable ~ prettier or hard wearing.

There are a number of things that can go wrong. It is a good idea to use some well established techniques.

The base board. If this is good quality how about not covering it? If it is really poor quality ~ strawboard ~ how about using something a little better. If you cover rubbish you end up with covered rubbish. Are you going to hide the edges of the boards? That affects the covering material to use.

The covering. A wealth of suitable ~ easily available ~ material is available ~ once you think of them ~ wrapping paper ~ cloth ~ canvas ~ leather ~ kraft paper ~ bookcloth ~ veneer. As a student bookbinder I used a lot of Rexine ~ it was (is?) the trade name of a colourful PVC coated fabric. It is thick ~ strong ~ easy to stick down ~ colourful ~ and much cheaper than leather. I also used tie-dyed cloth ~ since tie-dying was part of the craft course.
