This is a no-frills A5 book in the horizontal format ~ the hinge is on the short edge. The material used for the content is a light blue ~ 160gsm ~ office quality thin card.

The cover is a light blue hardwearing vinyl coated cloth ~ a specialist bookcloth.

Album ~ showing guards
Two sheets are joined by an overlapping strip ~
which serves as a guard when the sheets are folded
(The colour has gone badly wrong here!)

The pages of the book are separated with thin guards to allow for the thickness of the attachments to be inserted into album. The entire construction uses adhesives ~ with no sewing involved.

A similar small album ~ which uses sewing in its construction ~ is described elsewhere [ninnis].

For ease of reference I call this a Mawson Book, and similar books that are made have the same name if they meet this description. There is great scope for different sizes ~ colour ~ or extent. If the book is of similar construction then I describe it as being 'in the Mawson book style' ~ and make a note of the alterations, if providing a sales description.

This style of book construction is a particularly suitable binding for bookcraft beginners. Instructions are being compiled and will be available [113824].
There is a brief biographical note on Sir Douglas Mawson FRS ~ geologist ~ discoverer ~ Antarctic explorer [113819].
