I prefer to use a very sharp cobbler'sknife for this

Folding paper and separating into two parts is described by numerous participles ~ tearing ~ cutting ~ slicing ~ ripping ~ hacking. I am not going to try to define the differences between these terms, since most folk have their own idea as to what they mean. Many of them have other ~ more common ~ uses.

If it is carefully controlled I would prefer to use cutting ~ but the type of cutting needs to be described at times when there is a need for more precision ~ with scissors ~ with a straight edge, sharp knife, and cutting mat ~ with a sharp knife in the manner shown above.
