A biographical Note on George Boole LL D, DC, FRS

A prominent mathematician

George Boole ~ 1815-1864 ~ was a mathematician. Born in Lincoln, UK, he was largely self-educated in his early years. He established several schools in and around Lincolnl to supplement the family income. He married Mary Everest, the neice of George Everest (after whom the highest mountain in the World is named).

His original thinking in the fields of logics and mathematics brought him into contact with other similar great minds of the time. His various works were recognized by the granting of awards, medals and honorary degrees from the Royal Society and various universities. He later rose to be the first of the mathematics professors at Queen's College University in Cork, Ireland.

In December 1864 he walked the several miles from home, in the rain, to lecture at the university. He then returned home again, and developed pneumonia, and died shortly afterwards.

I find it difficult to summarize his main works ~ 'putting logical and philosophical stuff into mathematical symbols' ~ is the best I can do. I will gladly use a better sentence, should you care to contact me. Wikipedia has a very good summary.

Notes ~ Boole ~ Discovery Projects

Our Discovery Projects are named after historical people who discovered items ~ invented things ~ explored places ~ did stuff. Simply put ~ they progressed skills and knowledge. We hope to help you to do likewise. There is no relationship between their names, or their discoveries, and the subject of this, or any other, project. They are just names being used as labels. The label Boole is being used to embrace a number of different bookbinding kits named after discoverers and inventors all of which have the same characteristic of having an open-back spine. There is no significance ~ it is just a label ~ as is Coptic [115083] or Longstitch [115071] ~ neither of which is quite the same as Boole books
