Fan binding an A4 book
A view of the desktop and some tools ready for use
There are several ways of gluing a book by the fan binding method. Here is a picture of the desktop with some of the tools I used as I was binding books for a client in 2022. I may well do things differently next time ~ this is not an exemplar of 'The-Way-To-Do-It'.
Desktop and tools ready for fan binding
Clockwise-ish we have ...
- A ~ Desktop clutter. The lighting falls mainly over the main area of work ~ so the clutter is inconspicuous.
- B ~ Container of chip ~ clean newsprint ~ paper, all within reach
- C ~ The rest of the pile of books to be bound ~ not very tidily looked after
- D ~ Glue pot resting upside down in a container ~ I was using EVA this time
- E ~ Steel tape measure ~ not needed. Neatly stored on desktop ~ but will not be there when next required for duty
- F ~ the glue brush was not prepared and ready for this picture ~ it can seen at the foot of the 'F' with keen eyes
- G ~ Again ~ for keen eyes ~ here close to hand are my two diaries (next year's at the ready) ~ not needed unless I think of something important that must not be forgotten ~ it happens
- H ~ Alas this is very difficult to make out ~ this is the right hand end of a heavy stainless steel bar lying across the desk. The other end of the bar can hardly be seen ~ it is just touching the white container 'O'
- I ~ Scissors ~ not needed but always useful to have them nearby
- J ~ Sheet of chip paper to protect the desktop surface ~ cutting mat 'N'
- K ~ 2mm stainless steel sheet of size slightly greater in width than the sheets being bound. Plywoood ~ hardboard ~ millboard ~ many strong materials could equally well be used for this ~ but might not last for centuries
- M ~ One of the most useful tools in sight. I'm lucky and have two of them ~ the other one is holding the camera
- N ~ The rather nice elm tabletop is protected by a well worn cutting mat of size A2
- O ~ A damp cloth will invariably be needed ~ maybe to clean fingers ~ usually to mop-up glue spills
- P ~ Water and damp do not mix with book binding. The cloth is imprisoned behind the high walls of a useful stacking-style tub
- Q ~ There are several missing items. One day I will re-take this lot and remember it all ~ note for diary! There is a waste paper basket very close by, and also another steel bar. The pictures of this lot 'in action' will reveal all [127551].
